The concept of the building is to provide modular, flexible spaces for innovation research that can be sized to accommodate various engineering innovation projects. The mechanical system includes new VAV systems with air delivered to the occupied spaces by an overhead medium pressure duct system. Heating and cooling use steam and chilled water from the existing remote central plants, and include new pumps, heat exchangers, controls and valves. A shell-and-tube heat exchanger was designed to convert steam from the central plant to heating water for distribution throughout the building.
